Dancing in thin places

Dancing in Thin Places

The first in the series depicting the unseen spiritual world through symbolism. I am drawn to the visual representation of the Fibonacci spiral as beauty, perfection, and holiness. In my dancer it is in the motion of her dance of worship. This dance seen as pure by god and therefore perfect (hence the swirl). Her dress is seen on both sides of the portals and in this way she enters into the spiritual "thin place" experiencing both day and night simultaneously. The square motif shows that reality is always in flux. Another note about the portals is my feeling that they represent opportunities in all forms, change, growth and therefore, hope.

love in thin places

Love

Love is the true second work in the series. A very special piece it records the union of two people. More specifically it depicts myself and my husband Bryan. The symbolic spiral starts in the center of the two lovers representing perfect love. The two figures are entwined in such a way that it is uncertain where one begins and the other ends.

motherhood

Motherhood's Journey

Dancing in a field of wheat in various stages of growth is my woman. Her red dress spins in the tall grain and reveals the beginning of motherhood, the sensuality of womanhood.
I thought that grain in its green and gold (planting and harvest) was a beautiful symbol for conception, provision and nurture. She holds in her arms, "birth" the nurturing stage, while also raising her hands to the sky as an offering is her prayer for her child's spirit.
My Fibonacci spiral represents the holiness and beauty in her offering. The open bowl is the "letting go" of her child.

Formation

Departing from the figurative to the metaphorical, Formation personifies a seed in the throws of growth. It depicts personal and spiritual growth fostered by health, balance, and self-care.

drumcircleDrum Circle

Drum Circle captures a conversation honoring the heritage of women and drumming. The heralding of events or celebration was the topic of conversation with a friend and amazing percussionist, Sherri Pfaff. This painting is my visual expression of the spiritual sister connection that was felt in that moment. Having seen and heard Sherri on drum and experiencing her exuberance those feelings are embedded in this painting as well.

sisterhoodSisterhood of Believers

The centerpiece woman(who represents my mother and also other women who have lived with limitations imposed on them because of their gender) has a veil that reaches through one of my "thin place" portals. This veil turns into a road where others (women)who have gone before us walk. The idea of lifting up our sisters meshed with the idea that we are also supported by those that have gone before. It began as a work depicting myself, my mother, and my sister in the ancestorial line of all women and it evolved to depict Mary, Eve, and Everywoman in the line of spirituality and history that threads all women together.

The symbolism of the grid is shed in this piece depicting the divine act of creating, the true freedom from restriction.

Spirit Wind

spiritwindSpirit Wind introduces a new dimension in a grid within a grid. The ribbon weaves through the portals representing spirit, while my woman flies freely toward the large portal representing spiritual freedom.

kissed by the sunKissed By The Sun

Kissed by the sun represents being in a place of celebration and peace. The dancing woman in this piece was inspired by a combination of my experiences in the Bahamas and being with the people there and a story of a very special woman that is a friend of a friend that is a Rwanda genocide survivor. In my painting she celebrates hope in connecting to peace in that very, very "thin place".

valley of peaceValley Of Peace

My most abstract painting to date, Valley of Peace blurs the line of my original woman figure. She is still present in this work, but in more muted tones and less conspicuous. The path is behind her as she rests in a prayerful position in a valley, the future yet unknown. My portals are intentionally left empty in this work... for the viewer's personal interpretation.
